Rules

Ultimate tournaments in Tasmania are generally played using the WFDF rules. As of March 2009 tournaments have been using the 2009 revision of the official rules, with a few variations and clarifications (as outlined below).

Spirit

As of August 2010, all TUA tournaments use the 20-point Spirit of the Game ranking system developed by the WFDF and BULA.

Gender Matching

  1. The defensive team (pulling the disc) should field the same number of men and women as the offensive team (receiving the pull).
  2. It is expected that each team will field a minimum of one (1) player of each gender during each point
    1. If unforeseen circumstances require players to be playing 'savage' then this rule may be relaxed at the discretion of Tournament Director

Forfeits

  1. A team will forfeit a game if they can not field the minimum number of players required (as outlined by the relevant tournament specific rules) at the time the game is scheduled to start.
    1. The minimum player numbers must also adhere to the gender matching rules of the tournament.
  2. If a team forfeits a game:
    1. The score line will be 0-5.
    2. The forfeiting team is awarded a spirit score of 0.
    3. The winning team is awarded their average spirit score (rounded up).
      1. If the winning team has no previous spirit scores for the tournament, then a spirit score of 14 is awarded.

Ranking Criteria and Tie Breakers

The following criteria are used to determine the tournament tables:

  1. Competition points are awarded to teams based on the results of their games (Win: 3; Draw: 2; Loss: 1; Forfeit: 0)
  2. Team rankings are determined by (in order):
    1. Competition points.
    2. Spirit points.
    3. Head-to-head:
      1. Number of games won, counting only games between the teams that are tied.
      2. Goal difference, counting only games between the teams that are tied.
    4. Skill:
      1. Each team nominates one player to throw one disc from behind the goal line to the far brick point on a playing field designated by the LD.
      2. Throwing order is determined randomly, by disc toss or otherwise.
      3. Teams are ranked in order by the distance from the resting place of each disc to the brick point, from closest to furthest.
